“It is advisable for the student to become aware of conventional research methods, new ones and those technically possible today, to clarify in the design field what means this path can offer.”
Estratto dal bollettino A.A. 1963-64
“Starting from the recognition of its own specificity in the field of professional work and from the interest in a critical and proactive relationship with a vast production area present in the regional and national context, the address has as its aim the study and design of space and the object, verifying their mutual relationships at the various scales.”
Estratto dalla Guida dello Studente A.A. 1991 92, pag. 42, Presidente dell'Indirizzo Achille Castiglioni
DM 24/02/93

The project of introducing a Degree Course in Industrial Design into the Italian University Study Program (DM 24/2/93), and the proposal for its activation at the Faculty of Architecture of Politecnico di Milano, is the result of a initiative promoted by Tomàs Maldonado starting from 1990. The cultural and political action of promoting the Course among the Academic and Ministerial Authorities, developed by Tomás Maldonado himself and the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Cesare Stevan, with the assistance of the PPPE Department (Planning, Design and Building Production) of Politecnico di Milano, allowed the initiative to establish itself.
“The scenario in which this new figure lies is a transforming industrial society that must deal with environmental imbalances.”
Tomás Maldonado

«The Faculty of Design has fully embraced a 'polytechnic culture' from the very beginning, incorporating within itself the two disciplinary components that traditionally characterize the Milanese University: the artistic and architectural component on one hand, and the technical and engineering component on the other. This multidisciplinary vocation represents a dominant characteristic for the Faculty».
